Creating Community. Cinque Gallery Artists at The Art Students League of New York
Featuring work from a variety of artists including Vivian Browne, this exhibition focuses on the history of the Cinque Gallery. Cinque Gallery was an artist-led, non-profit space devoted to the promotion of black artists during its history from 1969-2004.
“Founded in 1969 by three master League artists, Romare Bearden (1911 – 1988), Ernest Crichlow (1914 – 2005), and Norman Lewis (1909 – 1979), Cinque Gallery was created to ‘provide a place where the works of unknown, and neglected artists of talent…’ primarily minority artists ‘would not only be shown but nurtured and developed.’ “
Selected works by Vivian E. Browne were recently represented in [Un]Common Collections: Selections from Fifteen Collectors at the Driskell Center at the University of Maryland.
