Creating Community. Cinque Gallery Artists at The Art Students League of New York
Featuring work from a variety of artists including Vivian Browne, this exhibition focuses on the history of the Cinque Gallery. Cinque Gallery was an artist-led, non-profit space devoted to the promotion of black artists during its history from 1969-2004.
“Founded in 1969 by three master League artists, Romare Bearden (1911 – 1988), Ernest Crichlow (1914 – 2005), and Norman Lewis (1909 – 1979), Cinque Gallery was created to ‘provide a place where the works of unknown, and neglected artists of talent…’ primarily minority artists ‘would not only be shown but nurtured and developed.’ “
Selected works by Vivian E. Browne were recently represented in [Un]Common Collections: Selections from Fifteen Collectors at the Driskell Center at the University of Maryland. The exhibition features 64 works from various artists, curated from dedicated collectors of African American art. The exhibit ran through November 22, 2019.
Featuring work from over forty female artists active during the Postwar era from 1945-1965, Postwar Women showcased the work of women from various social classes and ethnic backgrounds to highlight their connections and shine a light on female artists. Women represented included Vivian E. Browne along with her friends and contemporaries Faith Ringgold and May Stevens. The exhibition was displayed in the Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery from November 2 – December 1, 2019.
Showcasing the work of prominent and upcoming black female artists, the My Kind of Protest exhibition at the Pippy Houldsworth Gallery featured the “Little Men” portraiture series by Vivian E. Browne alongside selected works of Emma Amos and Chemu Ng’ok. The intergenerational body of work was exhibited from May 24 – August 19, 2019.

Little Men, a recent exhibition at the Ryan Lee Gallery in New York City, featured Vivian E. Browne’s series of “Little Men” portraits, running from February 21 – March 30, 2019.
Vivian’s work was represented alongside her fellows in the Brooklyn Museum’s touring exhibit We Wanted A Revolution: Black Radical Women, 1965-85 at the Brooklyn Museum, April 21 – September 17, 2017.
A selection of paintings by Vivian E. Browne were on display at the Kenkeleba House in New York City, in an exhibition featuring 34 female artists of African American heritage. The exhibit ran June 1-July 26 2016.
